Your Hampta Pass adventure begins in Manali, a vibrant hill town famed for its breathtaking scenery and fresh mountain air. From here, a picturesque drive leads you to Jobra, the starting point of your trek. The route winds through 40 hairpin bends, unveiling sweeping views of the Kullu Valley—a visual feast of deep green pine forests, rolling apple orchards, and the sparkling Rani Nallah River flowing below. It’s a drive that sets the perfect tone for the days ahead.
Perched at 9,800 feet, Jobra serves as your base camp, offering a cooler climate and higher altitude than Manali—ideal for acclimatization. After a short briefing by your trek leader and some warm-up stretches, you’ll set off on your trail towards Chika (10,100 ft), your first campsite.
The trek begins near the Allain Guhugal Hydel Project junction. As you cross the main road, you enter a serene forest filled with towering pine, maple, birch, deodar, and oak trees. The trail here is gentle and welcoming—perfect for easing into the rhythm of the mountains.
As you progress, the dense forest gradually opens up into a lush green meadow, dotted with smooth stones and framed by distant peaks. About 20 minutes into the walk, you’ll reach a scenic bend that offers a panoramic view of the valley—a scene so picturesque, it feels like stepping into a painting. The Rani Nallah river begins to reveal itself, meandering gracefully through the heart of the valley, adding a peaceful soundtrack to your walk and enhancing the trek’s magical atmosphere.
Day 2: Chikka to Balu ka Ghera.
Chika: 10,100 ft
Balu ka Ghera: 11,900 ft
Trek Distance: 8 km | 5-6 hours
The day begins with the comforting warmth of a hot cup of tea and breakfast, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Chika campsite. Today’s trek to Balu ka Ghera (11,900 ft) is moderately challenging, tracing the path of the Rani Nallah river as it winds deeper into the mountains.
The trail kicks off with a stretch of boulder patches, where the snow-covered peaks begin to rise more clearly in the distance, offering a taste of the grandeur that awaits. The path unfolds through a mix of rocky terrain, alpine meadows, and refreshing river crossings, keeping the journey dynamic and rewarding for trekkers.
One of the day’s most memorable highlights is Jwara, an enchanting alpine valley blanketed in wildflowers and dotted with gushing waterfalls. Often referred to as the “Valley of Flowers of Himachal Pradesh,” Jwara's lush beauty closely mirrors the famed valley in Uttarakhand, captivating all who pass through.
As you ascend, the scenery gradually changes. The soft grasslands of Chika give way to a rugged, glacial landscape, signaling your approach to Balu ka Ghera—a name that translates to “Heaps of Sand,” referring to the sandy deposits left behind by ancient glaciers.
Your campsite at Balu ka Ghera sits in a broad valley, flanked by towering peaks and offering a clear view of the Hampta Pass in the distance—a thrilling preview of the next day’s ascent.
After reaching camp, enjoy a well-earned hot meal and relax in your tents under the starlit sky. Rest is crucial, as the upcoming trek to Hampta Pass will be the most demanding and exhilarating stretch of the journey.
Day 3: Balu ka Ghera to Sheagoru via Hampta Pass.
Balu ka Ghera: 11,900 ft
Hampta Pass: 4,100 ft
Sehagoru: 12,900 ft
Trek Distance: 14 km | 8-9 hours
Today marks the most challenging and rewarding day of your Hampta Pass trek. You’ll be crossing the Hampta Pass (14,100 ft)—the highest point of the journey and a true highlight of the expedition. The day begins early, around 5:00 AM, to ensure you cross the pass before the weather turns unpredictable in the afternoon.
The trail kicks off with a steep ascent over loose rocks and boulders, testing your endurance right from the start. As you climb higher, the path transitions into snow patches and glacial moraines, with icy streams formed by melting snow crisscrossing your route. The valley behind gradually disappears, while the majestic Indrasan and Deo Tibba peaks come into sharper focus—commanding and awe-inspiring.
After 4 to 5 hours of continuous ascent, you reach the Hampta Pass summit. Here, you're rewarded with an extraordinary 360-degree panorama. To one side lies the lush, green Kullu Valley; to the other, the stark, dramatic Lahaul and Spiti landscape, with its arid slopes and rugged beauty. The contrast is striking—a visual reminder of the geographical and climatic divide you've just crossed.
Spend some time at the top soaking in the views, capturing photos, and savoring the moment—you’ve earned it.
The descent towards Sehagoru is steep and technical, requiring focus and caution as you navigate slippery snowfields and loose scree. Trekking poles come in handy here, especially on the unstable terrain. As you descend, the landscape shifts dramatically once again. The green valleys of Kullu are now behind you, replaced by the rugged, high-altitude wilderness of Lahaul Valley.
After 3 to 4 hours of descent, you reach Sehagoru (12,900 ft), a tranquil valley framed by towering mountains. A gentle river flows alongside the campsite, adding to the peaceful, remote ambiance—an ideal place to unwind after the most strenuous day of the trek.
Day 4: Sheagoru to Chatru and Drive to Chandratal | Return to Chatru.
Sehagoru: 12,900 ft
Chatru: 11,000 ft
Chandratal Lake: 14,100 ft
Trek Distance: 8 km | 4-5 hours
Drive Distance: 70 km round trip | 3-4 hours
After the demanding ascent and descent of the previous day, today’s trek offers a welcome change of pace. The trail from Sehagoru to Chatru (11,000 ft) is comparatively easier, beginning with a gentle descent along the banks of the Chandra River. The path winds through rocky patches and glacial streams, offering stunning views of the stark, barren landscapes that are characteristic of the Spiti Valley region.
As you trek through this cold desert terrain, the greenery of earlier days fades, replaced by dry, rugged slopes and a raw, untamed beauty. After about 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you arrive at Chatru, a small settlement that acts as a junction between Lahaul, Spiti, and Kullu valleys.
From Chatru, you’ll switch gears and begin a scenic drive to one of the crown jewels of this trek—Chandratal Lake.
The drive to Chandratal Lake covers approximately 70 kilometers round-trip and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The road is adventurous, winding through high-altitude terrain with dramatic views of barren cliffs, dusty trails, and snow-capped peaks—a photographer’s dream.
Perched at an altitude of 14,100 feet, Chandratal—literally translated as the “Moon Lake”—is a surreal, crescent-shaped water body famed for its shifting hues. Throughout the day, the lake transforms from deep blue to turquoise to emerald green, reflecting the surrounding peaks in its glassy surface. It’s a place of stillness and breathtaking natural beauty, ideal for relaxing, exploring, and capturing unforgettable photographs.
Spend some quiet moments at the lake—soaking in the otherworldly landscape and crisp mountain air—before heading back to Chatru for the night.
Day 5: Jeep Ride from Chatru to Manali.
Drive Distance: 85 km | 5-6 hours
After a hearty breakfast at the Chatru campsite, it's time to begin your return journey to Manali. The drive is nothing short of spectacular, taking you through the rugged beauty of the Lahaul Valley. As you descend, you're treated to sweeping views of towering mountains, dramatic rocky landscapes, and the Chandra River flowing alongside the winding road.
The ever-changing scenery offers a final reminder of the incredible contrasts you’ve experienced—from lush green valleys to stark high-altitude deserts. It’s the perfect conclusion to a trek that blends adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable memories.
